Description of Salkantay Trek:
The Salkantay Trek presents a magnificent alternative for the wilderness-lover who prefers a more pristine and less traveled route toward the extraordinary Incan ruins of ancient Machu Picchu. The mountains of the Cordillera Vilcabamba form a jagged chain between the region´s two great rivers, the Urubamba and the Apurimac. Along the mountains´ northern side, snow-capped peaks face verdant tropical rain forests, creating a breathtaking contrast between mountainous solitude and lush vegetation. The five-day Salkantay Trek begins at the sacred snow-capped mountain of Apu Salkantay in the high landscape, then descends through the verdant cloud jungles alive with flora and fauna and concludes at the awe-inspiring ruins of Machu Picchu.
